The horse is a mirror to your soul. Sometimes you might not like what you see. Sometimes you will.

What is Equine Assisted Wellbeing?

“Horses are highly attuned to their surroundings and the emotions of those around them…”

Equine Assisted Wellbeing is a therapeutic approach that harnesses the unique sensitivity and responsiveness of horses to support mental, emotional, and physical health.

Horses are highly attuned to their surroundings and the emotions of those around them. Research from the Australian National University (ANU) highlights their ability to detect even the subtlest shifts in human respiration, posture, and mood; an ability known as empathic resonance. This deep sensitivity allows them to mirror our emotional states, providing instant, non-judgmental feedback that helps individuals gain insight into their own feelings and behaviours.

“their steady, rhythmic heartbeats can influence human heart rates…”

Beyond their emotional awareness, horses also have a profound physiological impact. A 2010 study from the University of California found that their steady, rhythmic heartbeats can influence human heart rates, promoting relaxation and reducing stress. This bio-magnetic field interaction encourages the release of oxytocin, the “feel-good” hormone, fostering a sense of calm and connection.

Equine Assisted Wellbeing benefits a wide range of people, from those navigating trauma, addiction, or mental health challenges to neurodivergent individuals seeking connection and those with physical disabilities looking for meaningful engagement. Unlike humans, horses offer complete presence and impartiality—qualities that create a uniquely powerful therapeutic space.

What does an Equine Assisted Wellbeing session look like?

No two equine assisted wellbeing sessions are the same, because no two people are the same. These sessions are entirely client-led, meaning they evolve based on what you need in the moment. Whether it’s building confidence, processing emotions, or simply finding a sense of quiet, the horses meet you where you are, without judgement or expectation.

Our equine assisted wellbeing sessions are not confined to one location. While many take place at our Boyanup venue, we also offer mobile sessions, bringing therapy to you. Miniature horses can visit the beach, a park, or even your own home if mobility is a challenge. This flexibility ensures that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can experience the benefits of equine assisted wellbeing in a way that feels comfortable and accessible.

What happens in a session?

Rather than riding, most sessions focus on groundwork; observing, interacting with, and responding to the horses. You might:

  • Simply stand with a horse and tune into your breath, letting their steady presence help regulate your nervous system.

  • Guide a horse through an obstacle course, developing communication skills, trust, and problem-solving.

  • Groom a horse, arts & crafts, practicing mindfulness and grounding techniques.

  • Engage in reflective exercises, where the horse’s responses help you explore emotions, boundaries, and self-awareness.

Because horses respond to non-verbal cues, they offer immediate and honest feedback, making it easier to recognise patterns in your own behaviour and emotions.

Equine assisted wellbeing also works beautifully in group settings, such as aged care facilities or retirement homes. Horses (especially minis) can be brought to visit, providing companionship, sensory stimulation, and emotional connection. These sessions might involve:

  • Gentle interaction, such as stroking and grooming, which can reduce stress and increase positive emotions.

  • Group activities that encourage social engagement, storytelling, and reminiscing.

  • Observing the horses’ behaviours, which can spark meaningful conversations and reflections.
